What's in the pack

Pixel art horror screen effects: 34 full-screen overlays and 44 sprite effects (610 frames). VHS tracking, glitches, static and film grain; blood drips, heartbeat edges, frost, creeping darkness, fog and rain on a window; flashlight masks; and 64x64 ghosts, portals, cursed fire, glowing eyes and jumpscare bursts. For horror, analog-horror, PSX-style, survival and Halloween games, 2D or 3D: the overlays sit on top of any engine's screen.

Licence in one line: use them in your commercial games; do not resell the files. No credit required.

What you get

  • 14 analog / VHS overlays: tracking band, colour-split glitch bursts, TV snow, light static, film grain, film scratches, scanlines, a rolling scanline, a camcorder REC screen, PLAY / PAUSE / REW / FF labels and a NO SIGNAL screen.
  • 15 horror atmosphere overlays: vignette and breathing vignette, heartbeat red edges (one beat a second), blood running down the screen, 3 blood-on-the-lens pictures, frost creeping in, darkness reaching in, ground fog and thin fog that repeat, rain on a window, an eye blink, white and red flashes.
  • 5 flashlight masks: small, medium and large light holes, a flickering dying-battery version and a first-person cone. The masks are twice the screen, so the light follows your player anywhere.
  • 11 sprite effects at 64x64 in 4 colour sets (spectral green, phantom blue, cursed purple, blood red): ghost wisp, portal opening and swirling, possession aura, soul pull, shadow tendrils, cursed fire, glowing eyes that blink, splatter, jumpscare burst, teleport smoke.
  • 12 presets and 5 tints that say which layers to stack: found footage, bleeding out, something is near, the dark wins, dying battery, jumpscare...

Made to drop in

  • Drawn at 320x180, shipped at 320x180, 640x360 and 1920x1080 (exact whole-number copies), sprites at 1x to 4x. 1-bit alpha with pixel dithering, so edges stay crisp.
  • Every loop is checked: the last frame flows into the first. Static, grain and glitches are random frames that loop in any order.
  • The numbers are in the files: each sheet has a JSON with frame rectangles, fps, loop, opacity, blend and the sprite anchor; horrorfx.json lists everything.
  • A Godot 4 demo project with every preset on a CanvasLayer and the flashlight following the mouse (tested in Godot 4.7), and steps in the README for Unity, GameMaker, Ren'Py and RPG Maker MZ.
  • The screenshots use night scenes from Gridwright Parallax Backgrounds (sold separately, not included).

What it does not include

No shaders and no sound: these are pictures you play on top of your game (the Godot demo shows how). No characters or backgrounds. The art is drawn at 1x; the bigger files are scaled copies.

Use and modify in personal and commercial projects. Shipping the assets inside your game is fine. No resale or redistribution of the assets, modified or not. Credit is appreciated, not required. Not for AI training or NFTs.

How it was made

Every frame is drawn by code: noise that repeats, dithered gradients, shapes banded onto small colour ramps, and the loops built from time formulas that return to their start. No image generator was used and no third-party art is included. The code was written with AI-assisted tools, which is why the page is tagged AI Assisted.
