Usually yes, but only within what that asset’s licence says. Every pack, free or paid, comes with its own terms, and they differ between creators. This guide explains the common terms in plain language and what Gridwright’s licence allows. It is not legal advice; for a large or unusual project, ask a lawyer.
What licences usually cover
- Use: whether you may put the assets in a game, and whether that game can be sold.
- Modification: whether you may recolour, edit or combine the art.
- Redistribution: whether you may share or sell the asset files themselves. This is almost always forbidden.
- Credit: whether you must name the creator, and where.
Gridwright’s licence
You may use and modify Gridwright assets in personal and commercial projects, including shipping them inside your game. You may not resell or redistribute the assets on their own, as a pack or in an asset collection. Credit is appreciated but not required.
Free assets need checking too
Free does not mean unrestricted. Some free assets require credit, some forbid commercial use, and some use Creative Commons licences with specific conditions. Read the licence on each download page and keep a copy.
Before you ship
- List every third-party asset in your game, with where you got it.
- Save each licence text, or a screenshot of the terms, with your project files.
- Check that the game files do not let players extract assets as a reusable pack; shipping art inside a game is normal, but publishing the source files for download usually is not allowed.
- Add credits where licences require them, and where you want to thank creators.
- Keep your purchase receipts.
Mixing packs
When you combine assets from several creators, each one’s terms apply to its own files. A permissive licence for one pack does not extend to another. Matching grid size and palette is a style question; licence compatibility is a separate check.
Where to read the terms
The licence summary is on every Gridwright pack page and itch.io page, and on the About page. If something is unclear for your project, ask through itch.io before buying.
