What's in the pack

A small top-down horror game for Godot 4 that works from the first click. You are the night guard of an abandoned asylum. With only a flashlight, read the notes, find two keys, open the morgue and get out through the front door, while something tall walks the corridor. Open the project, press F5, and build your own horror game on top of it. The pixel art, the lights, the UI and the sounds are included.

Licence in one line: the code is MIT; the art may be used in your own games, free or commercial, but not shared or sold as art or as a starter kit.

What you get

  • Darkness and 2D lights: a flashlight cone with shadows that swings where you walk, failing fluorescent tubes, candles, an exit sign; walls stop the light.
  • One monster that patrols and chases: it walks a route, sees you when you are close, in its line of sight and holding a light, chases, forgets you when it loses sight of you, and backs off after a grab.
  • A fear meter and health: fear rises when it is near and in the dark, with a heartbeat, a vignette and a failing flashlight; health shows on an ECG monitor.
  • Locked doors and 2 keys, doors that play their opening frames, and 3 notes to read that tell the story.
  • Film grain, an ambience loop, a heartbeat loop and sound effects.
  • A main menu, a pause menu, an escape screen and a game over screen; keyboard and gamepad; pixel-perfect scaling (640x360 base resolution).

Made to be changed

  • Short scripts with comments: the monster's sight, speed and memory and the fear rules are a few exported numbers.
  • One TileSet: paint walls with the terrain tool and the brick faces appear where they meet the floor; walls have collision and light occluders.
  • A README with the controls, how the project is organised and 5 first changes (tuning the scare, a new room, your story, another monster, a battery or hiding places).
  • A play test that plays the night by itself (flashlight, notes, locked doors, keys, patrol, chase, fear, grab, escape, game over, pause) and prints a line per check.

What it does not include

One map, one monster, no inventory screen or saving: the project is small on purpose, so it is easy to read and to change. Godot 4.7 or newer is needed (made with 4.7.2, Compatibility renderer). The art is licensed for games made with this project; to use the packs elsewhere, get the packs.

The art comes from these Gridwright packs

Haunted Asylum, Horror Monsters, Modern People, 2D Lights & Glow, Horror VFX, Survival Horror UI (Rust theme), Pixel Fonts and Horror Sound Effects. Only the files this game uses are included. The full packs are in Gridwright Studio: https://gridwright.store
