What's in the pack
A small top-down action RPG for Godot 4 that works from the first click. Walk the meadow, fight slimes with your sword, open chests, go down into the crypt, get past the skeletons, find the key, unlock the vault and take the treasure. Open the project, press F5, and build your own adventure on top of it. The pixel art, the UI, the sounds and the music are included.
Licence in one line: the code is MIT; the art may be used in your own games, free or commercial, but not shared or sold as art or as a starter kit.
What you get
- A hero who walks in 8 directions and swings a sword, with a slash effect drawn for each direction, knockback and a blink after a hit.
- 2 monsters with their own behaviour: slimes wander and hop after you; skeletons stand guard until they see you (walls hide you), then chase.
- Hearts, coins and keys on the HUD; monsters drop coins and hearts.
- 2 rooms with exits and spawn points: a meadow with an animated pond, and a crypt with a hall and a locked vault.
- Chests and a locked door that the save remembers, a sign to read, a game over window with Try again.
- Save and load (every time you enter a room, and from the pause menu), a main menu with Continue, a pause menu.
- Keyboard, mouse and gamepad, pixel-perfect scaling (640x360 base resolution), music per room and sound effects.
Made to be changed
- Short scripts with comments. Every monster shares one base script; a new monster is one think() function.
- One TileSet with 3 terrains (path, animated water, dungeon walls) that you paint with Godot's terrain tool; the walls show their brick face wherever they meet the floor.
- A README with the controls, how the project is organised and 5 first changes (a new room, a new monster, tuning the fight, filling chests, adding items).
- A play test that plays the whole loop by itself (fight, get hurt, heal, chest, room change, chase, key, door, treasure, save, load, game over) and prints a line per check.
What it does not include
No inventory screen, dialogue system, levelling or quests: the project is small on purpose, so it is easy to read and to change. Godot 4.7 or newer is needed (made with 4.7.2, Compatibility renderer). The art is licensed for games made with this project; to use the packs elsewhere, get the packs.
The art comes from these Gridwright packs
Top-Down Tileset, Dungeon Tileset, Top-Down Characters, Pixel Monsters, Combat VFX, RPG Item Icons, Fantasy RPG UI (gold theme), Pixel Fonts, Retro Sound Effects and Chiptune Music. Only the files this game uses are included. The full packs are in Gridwright Studio: https://gridwright.store
