What's in the pack

A small vertical space shooter for Godot 4 that works from the first click. Fly your ship, hold fire, clear three waves of enemies, pick up power-ups and take down the gunship at the end. Open the project, press F5, and build your own shmup on top of it. The pixel art, the UI, the sounds and the music are included.

Licence in one line: the code is MIT; the art may be used in your own games, free or commercial, but not shared or sold as art or as a starter kit.

What you get

  • A ship that moves in 8 directions inside a vertical playfield, banks, has an engine flame and a small hit box, and fires while you hold the button.
  • A gun with 3 power levels and power-ups that drop from chosen enemies.
  • 3 waves written as data: weaving scouts, saucers that take position and shoot at you, diving interceptors, and a gunship that sweeps the screen firing fans and rings of bullets.
  • 3 lives, a shield after a hit, explosions, a score and a saved high score, a wave banner and an end window with Play again.
  • A 3-layer scrolling star field and side panels for the score, lives and power.
  • A main menu and a pause menu; keyboard and gamepad; pixel-perfect scaling (640x360 base resolution); music with a boss track, and sound effects.

Made to be changed

  • The waves and the enemies are data in one short file: change a wave, add a wave, add an enemy type.
  • Short scripts with comments: three ways to move (dive, hold, boss) and three ways to shoot (aimed, fan, ring) in one enemy script.
  • A README with the controls, how the project is organised and 5 first changes (your own waves, a new enemy, new bullet patterns, more power-ups, the feel).
  • A play test that plays the game by itself (moving, firing, scoring, power-ups, hits and the shield, the waves, the gunship, the high score, game over, pause) and prints a line per check.

What it does not include

Three waves and one boss, no bombs or extra weapons: the project is small on purpose, so it is easy to read and to change. Godot 4.7 or newer is needed (made with 4.7.2, Compatibility renderer). The art is licensed for games made with this project; to use the packs elsewhere, get the packs.

The art comes from these Gridwright packs

Space Shooter, Bullet Hell Projectiles, Explosions, Sci-Fi HUD (Cyan theme), Pixel Fonts, Retro Sound Effects and Chiptune Music. Only the files this game uses are included. The full packs are in Gridwright Studio: https://gridwright.store
